Former world number one Marcelo Rios has withdrawn from Wimbledon with a leg injury organizers confirmed Thursday in London.
The 24-year-old Chilean, who reached the fourth round in 1997 but also missed last year's All England Championships, was the first South American to reach top spot in the ATP world list in March 1998.
But he is currently ranked 39 in the Champions Race and is more at home on clay rather than the grass of Wimbledon.
Wimbledon referee Alan Mills confirmed: "Marcelo Rios has withdrawn from Wimbledon today due to an injury to his upper leg muscle."
In Rios' two other appearances at Wimbledon, in 1995 and 1998, he was knocked out in the first round. He had been due to face Hicham Arazi of Morocco in the opening round - (AFP)
