Iran’s private sector should invest in telecommunications to help the country keep pace with other countries' progress in this field, a government official said on Tuesday.

First Vice President Hassan Habibi said that expansion of Iran's telecommunication networks required a huge investment, far beyond the capacity of the public sector, according to the official Iranian news agency (IRNA).

Habibi said that the private sector should help bridge this gap. Pointing out that progress in the field of telecommunications was one of the main indicators of development in each country, Habibi said countries that had paid attention to this field for the past 20 years were now among the main producers of telecommunication hardware and software.

Criticizing the country's failure to take full advantage of the Internet in the past, the official said that the Internet was a "comprehensive means which could be used for various purposes, particularly for education.” – Albawaba.com
