ALBAWABA - Iranian authorities have arrested a Japanese journalist who works in Tehran, AFP reported Wednesday.
According to local media, the Tehran bureau chief of Japanese public broadcaster NHK was sent to a prison in which the country keeps political prisoners.
The journalist was identified as Shinnosuke Kawashima by US-funded Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty's Radio Farda, which reported on Tuesday. Kawashima was taken to Evin Prison on Monday, Feb. 23.
Iran is holding Kawashima in Ward 7 of the jail, where political prisoners usually stay.
On the other hand, Iran International said that the exact date of the Japanese journalist's arrest and the charges against him are unclear. However, Reuters cited Deputy Chief Cabinet Secretary Masanao Ozaki, who said the national was detained on January 20.
"We at NHK always act with the safety of our staff as our top priority. At this time, we are unable to comment further," an NHK spokesperson told AFP on Wednesday.
