Iran said on Tuesday it planned to import six million tons of wheat by the end of the current Iranian year (March 20,2001), but the United States would only supply the country with a small proportion of the amount needed to make up for Iran’s shortage of this essential commodity, according to Iran Daily, quoting a top official.
“We imported 12 million tons of wheat in the past two years because of the drought. This year, we will import another six million tons,” Minister of Commerce Mohammad Shariatmadari was quoted as telling reporters.
