Iran's intelligence ministry said Friday that security forces had arrested two agents of the opposition People's Mujahadeen and defused a bomb they were carrying, the official IRNA news agency reported.

The ministry said the arrests were made in an unspecified part of the northwestern province of West Azerbaijan and the bomb was intended to go off "in a busy place."

A People's Mujahadeen spokesman told AFP in Nicosia the report was false, saying none of its members had been arrested and it was not the group's policy to make indiscriminate bomb attacks.

The spokesman suggested the report was aimed at diverting attention from recent attacks by the Iraq-based Mujahadeen, the latest being the use of Katyusha rockets against military bases earlier Friday in Ilam and Khuzestan provinces -- TEHRAN (AFP)
