Veteran BBC journalist John Simpson and two of his colleagues were released Monday nearly two days after being arrested by secret police in Iran.

Simpson and his colleagues were reporting on celebrations in Tehran following President Mohammad Khatami's election victory, reports said.

Simpson, the BBC world editor, was reportedly arrested during an angry skirmish, when one of the secret policemen dug his finger into Simpson's eye.

The Irish Times reported that the team was held at a nearby police station before being released.

Simpson headed back home following the release, according to the report – Albawaba.com
