The secretary-general of the banned but tolerated opposition Iran Freedom Movement (IFM) has been hospitalized for treatment in the United States, the group said in a statement Saturday.
It said Ibrahim Yazdi was undergoing "intensive" prostate treatment in a Houston, Texas hospital that was expected to last about four months but the statement, faxed to AFP, did not specify if he was suffering from cancer.
The progressive IFM was founded in the 1960s by Mehdi Bazargan, who went on to become Prime Minister in the provisional government after Iran's 1979 Islamic revolution.
Yazdi, a key figure in the revolution, was his foreign minister and took over the helm of the IFM after Bazargan's death in 1995.
He is believed also to have US nationality -- TEHRAN (AFP)
