The Iranian judiciary plans to ask the Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei to grant amnesty to a number of prisoners convicted by public, revolutionary and military courts, a judiciary official said Thursday, quoted by Iranian official news agency (IRNA).
Ali Qahremani, director-general of the remission committee of the judiciary, told IRNA, the prisoners are to be pardoned on the occasion of the Judiciary Week, due to start Saturday. He did not give specify the number of prisoners who are to be amnestied.
"Last (Iranian calendar) year, 22,187 prisoners were pardoned and 11,778 others had their sentences commuted," he said, adding, "The year before last, some 55,400 prisoners were either pardoned or had their sentences cut." -- Albawaba.com
