Iran's reformists-dominated legislature passed Wednesday a draft law that would disallow security forces from entering university campuses and academies, according to Iranian press reports.
According to the bill, violators would face jail sentences between 6 months and a year, with a 3-5 year suspension.
The law will be in effect after it is ratified by Guardian Council, which is dominated by the conservatives who have been at odds with the parliament or Majlis.
In 1999, anti-riot police backed by hardliners stormed Tehran University campus to disperse a peaceful rally, but the confrontation led to the death of one student and injury of scores.
However, the bill allows security forces to enter campuses, including Shiite Muslim seminaries, only with authorization from the interior minister for Tehran-based universities and local governors in other areas – Albawaba.com
