Security operatives on board a domestic Iranian passenger plane foiled a hijacking attempt Saturday evening and detained a man who had threatened to blow up a bomb, turned out to be a hoax.

The incident happened at 21:15 (local time) when the Russian-made Tupolev-145 was flying from the southeastern city of Kerman to Tehran at a height of 30,000 feet.

The hijacker, who had sprayed his clothes with alcohol, threatened to set himself alight with a lighter in his hand and blow a bomb if prevented from entering the cockpit.

Security operatives of the Islamic Revolution’s Guards Corps subdued him before entering the plane’s cockpit. Eventually, the plane safely landed at the Mehrabad Airport.

The identity of the hijacker and his motives are still unknown. (Albawaba.com)
