“It remains our top priority to get all our staff freed”, said London’s Foreign Office today. Iran released a British embassy staffer today, leaving one more in jail. But according to a leading Iranian cleric, the remaining staffer could be tried for inciting unrest following the disputed June 12 presidential election.
Britain’s foreign secretary, David Miliband, said there would be “consequences” if Iran does not release the other Embassy worker soon. “The whole of the European Union and actually the international community more broadly has been absolutely united in saying that there’s no place for this sort of intimidation or harassment and that there will be consequences if it continues,” he said yesterday.
The minister said the jailed worker did absolutely nothing wrong, saying, “He is an honorably, patriotic Iranian who has been working in an open, transparent way for the United Kingdom.”
Iran also released a journalist for the Washington Times, Lason Athanasiadis. The Greek and British citizen had been jailed in the wake of the presidential election protests as well.
