ALBAWABA- In response to a statement by the United States Department of Justice, the legal adviser to Iran’s President told state media on Thursday that Iran will retaliate if its ships are seized.

Department of Justice issued a statement announcing the seizure of more than 500,000 barrels of Iranian fuel to clamp down on the "Revolutionary Guards’ financing network".

"If an Iranian ship is seized, we will respond, and the legal path is not closed in this regard," said legal counsel Mohammad Dehghan, who was unable to confirm whether US officials had captured an Iranian vessel.

Court decisions issued by Iran's legal system have frequently been used to justify the Revolutionary Guards' seizure of foreign tankers. Since late last year, worldwide trade in the Red Sea has been hampered by Iran-aligned Houthi militants in Yemen targeting ships supporting the Palestinian Hamas organization in its confrontation with Israel.
