An Iranian cleric, Mohammad-Reza Bozorgi Araqi, was shot and injured by two unknown men in the early hours of Sunday morning, following commemorations of the first anniversary of a bloody police attack against a Tehran university dormitory, the conservative Qods paper reported Thursday.
According to the paper, Bozorgi Araqi was shot in the stomach shortly after midnight in front of his house.
"After the attack, the two men fled on a motorbike," the paper said.
Bozorgi Araqi was taken to a Tehran hospital where he underwent an operation.
The paper said his current situation was "satisfactory," but added that he was still in hospital.
Police and security officials are investigating the incident, but the attackers have still not been identified, the paper said.
Several hundred students gathered at Tehran's university campus Saturday to commemorate the attack on the dorm last year, which sparked the worst unrest in the country since the 1979 Islamic revolution, leading to the deaths of at least three people.
During Saturday's demonstrations, which initially began as a peaceful protest baptised "reforms with a smile," dozens of students were arrested and many others injured after clashes broke out between reformist and conservative students.
