ALBAWABA - In the first state visit since his inauguration in late July, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has landed in Baghdad, Iraq.
Upon the invitation of Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani, Pezeshkian headed a high-profile political and economic delegation touching down at Baghdad International Airport.
During the three-day visit, Pezeshkian is expected to hold meetings with senior Iraqi officials, the conclusion of mutual cooperation agreements, and attendance at gatherings with the Iraq-based Iranians, including businessmen, PressTV reported.
Iran Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, who is accompanying Pezeshkian on the tour, stated before his departure that the nation and Iraq planned to sign up to 15 memorandums of agreement during the president's stay.
Araghchi stated that he expects the visit would improve the "strategic profundity of the two nations' relations and cause our cooperation with Iraq to enter a new stage".
Following the formal meetings, the president will proceed to visit Najaf and Karbala to visit the shrines of Imam Ali and Imam Hussein (AS), the first and third Shia Imams, respectively, PressTV reported.
During his visit to Iraq, Pezeshkian plans to inspect projects being implemented by Iranian firms in the southwestern Iraqi city of Basra, as well as visit the northern Iraqi Kurdistan region's capital of Erbil and city of Sulaymaniyah at the invitation of the semi-autonomous region's officials.
