ALBAWABA - Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) on Monday announced conducting a series of military exercises in the Strait of Hormuz, the country's state TV said.
The military drills aim to prepare the IRGC for "potential security and military threats" in the strait, state TV reported. The drills are called by Iran's Revolutionary Guards Navy as the "smart control of Hormuz Strait".
The United States have sent an armada to the region amid continued tension between Tehran and Washington. In response, the Iranian government have repeatedly warned to shut down the strait, which is a major route for about 20 percent of the world's oil production.
The exercises, overseen by Guards chief General Mohammad Pakpour, will help enhance the military's ability to react quickly.
The drills take place as Tehran and Washington are set for a new round of talks in Geneva on Tuesday, mediated by Oman.
On the other hand, U.S. President Donald Trump had earlier sent a significant naval force to the Middle East amid continued tension between Washington and Tehran.
