ALBAWABA - Sources in Washington and Tel Aviv confirmed that Mexican security services thwarted an Iranian plot earlier this year to assassinate Einat Kranz-Neiger, Israel’s ambassador to Mexico. The plan, attributed to the Iranian Revolutionary Guard’s Quds Force, was reportedly uncovered and neutralized during the summer.

According to American and Israeli officials cited by U.S. media, the foiled plot was part of a broader IRGC operation targeting Israeli and Jewish diplomats and figures across several continents.

Intelligence assessments point to Unit 11000 of the Quds Force as the entity behind the attempted attack — the same unit believed responsible for efforts to strike Israeli and Jewish targets in Europe and Australia in recent months.

Officials say planning began in late 2024, led by an operative who had previously been stationed at the Iranian embassy in Venezuela, where he recruited agents in Latin America before returning to Tehran

Operation Disrupted in Mid-202

A senior U.S. official said the conspiracy remained active through mid-2025 until Mexican authorities, working with international intelligence partners, were able to disrupt the plan completely.

According to the source, the threat “has been fully contained” and no longer poses immediate danger, though he declined to provide specifics about how the plot was uncovered or prevented. Iran’s mission to the United Nations declined to comment on the allegations.

Israel Thanks Mexico, Vows Continued Coordination

Israeli Foreign Ministry spokesperson Oren Marmorstein expressed gratitude to Mexican authorities for their “crucial role” in stopping the operation. He said Israeli intelligence agencies would continue to work closely with global partners to prevent “any terrorist threats from Iran or its proxies” against Israeli or Jewish interests abroad.

Context: Rising Tensions After Damascus Strike

The alleged assassination plan appears to be linked to rising tensions following Israel’s April 1, 2024 strike on a facility associated with the Iranian embassy in Damascus, which killed senior IRGC officers. Iran vowed retaliation, and Western intelligence agencies have since warned of renewed Quds Force activity abroad.

This is not the first time Iran has been accused of attempting operations overseas, while Israel maintains its own history of targeting Iranian officials in third countries.
