April was the deadliest month in Iraq since 2008, the United Nations said on Thursday, according to AFP. Over 700 people were killed.
The UN said in a statement “the month of April was the deadliest since June 2008. A total of 712 people were killed and another 1,633 were wounded in acts of terrorism and acts of violence,” AFP reported.
The country has been rocked by a wave of sectarian violence, with Baghdad bearing the brunt of the attacks. Attacks were also in the restive Eastern province of Anbar, the heart of a Sunni-led movement against the Shia government.
The vast majority of those killed were civilians.
In response to the deadly attacks, Shi'ite President, Nour al Maliki has banned ten satellite TV channels, including Al Jazeera, for, "encouraging violence and sectarianism".
