American and Iraqi forces killed 53 "suspected insurgents" in a raid southeast of Baghdad, Iraqi police said Sunday.

According to the AP, police Lt. Bilal Ali Majid said Saturday night's raid targeted an area of fruit farms near the city of Madain, about 14 miles from the capital. Majid said Iraqi and U.S. forces had come under repeated attack from gunmen in the area. He said air cover was used in the assault.

Meanwhile, the U.S. military on Sunday announced the death of an Army soldier in fighting in western Baghdad, bringing to 12 the number of US soldiers killed in Iraq this month.

A brief statement from the military said the Baghdad-based soldier was killed by small arms fire.
