A suicide and mortar attack on a government compound in Iraq's northern town of Tarmiya left 9 people dead and 17 wounded Tuesday, according to Reuters.

Police and medics reported that one suicide attacker carried bombs on a belt and blew himself up near government offiices, including the mayor's headquarters and a police station.

Other militants reportedly shot at security guards in the town and fired mortars at the compound.

No group has yet taken responsibility for the attacks, but Sunni Muslim militants have often targeted Shi'ite-linked government and army offices and officials since early 2013.

Al Qaeda has also been increasingly responsible for attacks throughout the country as a result of an overspill in violence from the war in neighboring Syria.
