AFP reports that a massive rainstorm has caused flooding and destruction in Iraq, with more storms expected over the weekend.

Baghdad and nearby camps for internally displaced persons are facing thigh-high flooding and rivers of mud. Due to poor infrastructure, the rain has also unleashed sewage into the streets.

"Forget the furniture, I am afraid of the diseases this can spread. Shame on our past leaders, who allowed everything in this city to rot," said Ahmed, from northwestern Baghdad.

Problems with city infrastructure and access to services provoked protests in Iraq this summer, when electricity was scarce while temperatures topped 50 degrees Celsius (120 Fahrenheit).

The storm that hit Baghdad on Wednesday evening was the first since the uncommonly hot, dry summer. Weather forecasts predicted more thunderstorms for Friday and next week.
