A family of five was killed on Sunday in the Iraqi town of Mosul, south of Baghdad, when gunmen entered their house and opened fire.

"Unknown gunmen stormed into the house of a family in the al-Baker neighborhood in eastern Mosul early in the morning and opened fire, leaving three women and two men killed," said of police media office in the Nineveh province, Brigadier Sa'id al-Jabouri, according to Xinhua.

Local police are reportedly investigating the incident. It is unclear what sect the family or the gunmen belonged to.

One day earlier, nearly 20 people had been killed in one of the bloodiest days in Iraq. Three U.S. soldiers were also killed when the vehicle they were traveling in was hit by a roadside bomb south of the capital, according to Reuters.  U.S. military sources also reported that on Saturday a U.S. airman killed in Baghdad along with a US Marine killed in Anbar province.

Seven bodies that had been dumped north of the capital were also discovered by security forces.
