Five American troops participating in a "combat operation" died by a roadside bomb west of Baghdad during Iraq's constitutional referendum, the military said Sunday.

Saturday's explosion hit the soldiers' vehicle in Ramadi, 70 miles west of Baghdad, the military declared.

According to the AP, six mortar rounds hit the ciry's Hall of Sports, a facility used as a voting center, then clashes erupted between gunmen and American soldiers in the city's center.

Meanwhile, the lawyer of Iraq's former deputy prime minister, Tariq Aziz, has dismissed a British press report that his client had agreed to testify against Saddam Hussein in his upcoming trial. The Sunday Telegraph reported that, in return for his cooperation, Aziz could be released from prison soon after the end of Saddam's trial, which begins Wednesday. But Aziz's lawyer, Badee Izzat Aref, told The Associated Press the report was "completely groundless.''
