U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry traveled to Baghdad Wednesday for his first meeting with Iraq’s new prime minister, Associated Press (AP) reports.

Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi officially took office yesterday, replacing Nouri al-Maliki. According to AP, Kerry will urge Abadi to ease sectarian tensions and has promised to help the Iraqi government in its fight against Islamic State militants.

The international community is urging Iraq to run a more inclusive government amid the rise of the Sunni Islamic State extremists.
