According to a report by the United Nations, 979 people were killed in Iraq in October 2013. Of the casualties, 852 were civilians and 127 belonged to the military and police force.
AP reports that in addition to the casulaties, 1,902 Iraqis were injured in Iraq in October.
Earlier today, four people were killed in attacks in Samarra and Mosul.
According to Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki said that terrorists "got a second chance" to thrive in Iraq, largely as the result of the rise of al-Qaida fighters in neighboring Syria's civil war. He added the world needs to help Iraq deal with its deadly insurgency.
Nearly half of the deaths occurred in Baghdad followed by Ninevah province.
Bloodshed in Iraq accelerated sharply after April 23. On that date, a crackdown by security forces on a Sunni protest camp in a northern Iraqi town set off a chain of near daily attacks. Today, Iraq is seeing its worst levels of violence since 2006, when over ten thousand people were killed in Sunni Shia sectarian conflicts.
