Iraq: Over 100 dead in last 24 hours

A series of attacks in a dozen of Iraqi cities, including Baghdad, killing at least 91 people, according to an updated toll, released by medical and security sources. A total of nine attacks occurred in Baghdad and north of Baghdad, injuring 144 persons. Many police officers and soldiers were among the victims.

The bloodiest attack occurred in Taji, 25 km north of Baghdad. A series of explosions there killed at least 18 dead and wounded 29, according to two medical sources.

At about 5:00 (2:00 GMT), armed men broke into a military base near the town of Doulouiya, 90 km north of the capital. A doctor at the hospital in Balad, near the base, said seven soldiers were killed and two others were injured.

The violence has also reported in the towns of Saadiyah, Khan Beni Saad, Kirkuk, Tuz Khourmatou and Dibis, all north of Baghdad.

In Kirkuk, Tuz Khourmatou and Dibis, at least seven people died and 29 others were injured in a series of explosions. Checkpoints of the army and police in Saadiyah Khan Beni Saad, in Diyala province, northeast of Baghdad, have been targeted by gunmen, killing two soldiers and a policeman. Four members of the security forces were also wounded.

Two people died when a car bomb went off in the neighborhood of Husseiniyah, north of Baghdad, officials said. Ten people were injured.

The day before, at least 17 people were killed during a series of attacks. Nearly 100 people were injured.
