Iraq recalls envoy to Damascus over bombings

Iraq on Tuesday ordered its ambassador to Syria to return home and demanded that Damascus hand over two senior Baathist leaders suspected in ordering last week's truck bombings in the Iraqi capital. A total of 93 people were killed last Wednesday when the bomb exploded at or near the heavily guarded foreign and finance ministries.

These bombings took place a day after Iraqi Premier Nouri al-Maliki asked the Syrian president in talks to hand over Baath party members that Baghdad suspects of orchestrating violence in Iraq.

"The cabinet demands the Syrian government hand over Mohammed Younis al-Ahmed and Sattam Farhan," said Tuesday's statement quoting Iraqi government spokesman Ali Al-Dabbagh. "The cabinet decided to ask that they be handed over for their direct role in carrying out the terrorist operation," it added, according to AFP.
