Iraq has renamed a Baghdad road and school after 12-year-old Palestinian boy Mohammed Jamal al-Durra, who was shot dead in his father's arms by Israeli troops, newspapers said Friday.

A cabinet meeting chaired by President Saddam Hussein late Thursday decided to honor the "martyr ... as a sign of solidarity with the Palestinian people in their struggle with the enemy".

Armed struggle was the only path for the Palestinian people to recover their territory and Jerusalem, the Iraqi government said.

Saudi Prince Sultan bin Salman bin Abdel Aziz, meanwhile, has decided to pay for the education of the brothers of the Palestinian boy whose death in a Gaza shootout on September 30 shocked the world.

And the Arab League has decided to mark October 1 as Arab Child Day.

Israel's Deputy Defense Minister said on Wednesday that the shooting of Mohammed as he cowered on the ground behind his father was "a mistake which was not caused by intention" to kill.

Traumatic television footage of the killing provoked reactions of horror and shock, including from US President Bill Clinton.

The boy's father, who was also seriously wounded, has called for international action to avenge his son - BAGHDAD (AFP)
