ALBAWABA - In a post on X, the Iraqi Security Media cell released a statement revealing the details behind the attack on Ain al-Asad airbase in al-Anbar, which resulted in injuring at least 5 US military personnel.

The statement said that the attack occurred later on August 5th, which houses a number of international coalition security advisors, using two rockets that were fired towards the airbase coming from Haditha district.

At least five US military personnel were injured in an attack on an army base in Iraq, according to US sources, as tensions rise following the deaths of prominent Hamas and Hezbollah leaders Ismail Haniyeh and Fuad Shukr last week.

Two Katyusha rockets were fired toward the Ain al-Assad airfield in western Iraq on Monday, according to two Iraqi security sources who spoke with Reuters. According to an Iraqi source, the missiles crashed inside the base.

According to US sources who spoke with Reuters on condition of anonymity, one of the Americans was critically injured. Meanwhile, Associated Press reported, citing US defense sources, that up to seven service personnel and civilians were injured.

"Base personnel are conducting a post-attack damage assessment," one of the sources told Reuters. Ismail Haniyeh, the political head of the Palestinian party Hamas, was slain in Tehran last week, prompting Iran to threaten retaliation. Iran has blamed Israel for the assassination, but Israel has not accepted responsibility.
