Sanctions-hit Iraq waved off 43 truckloads of food for the Palestinians on Saturday, Trade Minister Mohammad Mehid Saleh said.

"The convoy is made up of 43 trucks loaded with food, mainly rice, flour, sugar, oil and baby milk," Saleh told journalists.

All have been strictly rationed in Iraq since the 1991 Gulf war.

It was the second convoy to head for Jordan to be shipped on to the Palestinians, following 2,800 tons of food dispatched Thursday aboard 62 trucks.

President Saddam Hussein said Tuesday the aid was "a commitment from Iraq (to the Palestinians) because we are the same people sharing food and medicines."

Iraq has offered five million Euros (4.2 million dollars) to the relatives of Palestinians killed by Israel in the three weeks of clashes, and treatment for some of the wounded in its hospitals – BAGHDAD (AFP)
