A US Marine died when the vehicle he was in came under fire in Iraq, the Department of Defense announced Friday.
Meanwhile, the governor of the Iraqi province where Abu Musab al-Zarqawi died on June 7 called in the army after clashes between Sunni and Shi'ite fighters north of Baghdad on Friday, police and his office said.
The U.S. military said U.S.-led forces killed three "insurgents" and captured four in clashes that started on Thursday in the nearby village of Khairnabat, where police and witnesses said Shi'ite militias had attacked Sunnis fleeing the town.
Police told Reuters suspected Shi'ite militias on Friday fired three rocket-propelled grenades at a Sunni mosque in Muqdadiya, 90 km northeast of Baghdad, damaging the mosque's minaret but causing no casualties.
Sunni insurgents fired mortar rounds at a Shi'ite mosque in Muqdadiya to retaliate for the first attack, police said, also leaving no casualties.
