An Iraqi dissident was discovered hanged on Wednesday at an Islamic center in the southern Lebanese port city of Tyre, his head beaten with an iron bar, according to police.
34-year-old Walid Ibrahim Mayahi, a researcher at the Al-Sadr Islamic Cultural Center, was found hanging by a rope in one of its rooms, and "the victim's head bore marks of a beating with an iron bar," a police officer told AFP.
Meanwhile, three other Iraqi dissidents who lived in the building were missing early Wednesday, added the officer, who said the death had occurred overnight in Tyre, which is located an estimated 80 kilometers south of Beirut.
The center was founded five years ago by followers of Ayatollah Mohammed Mohammed Sadek Sadr, a Shiite leader assassinated in Iraq in 1999, and is regularly visited by high-level Shiite clerics opposed to Iraqi President Saddam Hussein. (Albawaba.com)
