The military wing of the Palestinian Islamic Jihad Movement, Jerusalem Brigades, has said that it killed an Israeli soldier Tuesday morning in a mortar attack it carried out against an army post in Tel Zaareb, south of Rafah.
In a statement faxed to Albawaba.com, the group said the attack led to “the death and injury of a number of the Zionist soldiers.”
“The enemy admitted this morning that a Zionist soldier was killed, but customarily, it covered up its losses claiming he was killed in a military drill.”
Ariel Raviv, 20, was killed overnight Monday in a training accident near the Negev town of Arad, Israel Radio reported, cited by Haaretz newspaper.
He was most likely killed as a result of friendly fire during a training exercise, said the radio.
Raviv is the third soldier to be killed in a training accident in the last week, said the paper.
As a result, Israeli Chief of Staff Shaul Mofaz announced Tuesday that the army will not hold any training exercises on Thursday, and will instead spend the time going over safety regulations with troops, the paper said - Albawaba.com
