The Palestinian group Islamic Jihad called for the Palestinians to keep up their uprising against Israeli forces, in a statement received in Damascus Tuesday.

"We call on the masses of our people to respond with revolt and vengeance to the crimes committed by the Zionist enemy," the group said in the statement datelined from Jerusalem.

"There is no other way than Intifada (uprising) and resistance to recover our territory and our rights."

Islamic Jihad renewed its "rejection of attempts aimed at circumventing and aborting the Intifada so as to frustrate the wave of solidarity of the Arab and Islamic peoples with the Palestinian people."

The call for Intifada came at a time of intensive diplomatic efforts, notably by UN Secretary General, Kofi Annan, to broker an end to the violence in the Palestinian territories – DAMASCUS (AFP)
