The commanders of Israeli intelligence reported Sunday to the government that Palestinian President Arafat is in full control of the events in the Palestinian territories, and that it is his orders to the Tanzim and to Fateh that have led to a low level of conflict, reported the Israeli Army Radio Sunday afternoon.
At a government meeting earlier, the military intelligence were quoted by the radio as reporting that “the chairman of the Palestinian Authority, Yasser Arafat, is in control of the street, and is interested in continuing to encourage the violence as leverage to attain political goals.”
The radio’s political correspondent, Raviv Druker, reported that the head of the intelligence division in the general staff, General Amos Malka, and head of the research division, General Amos Gilad, told the ministers that Arafat is also in control of the Tanzim, and is issuing orders, with the goal of maintaining a certain level of violence, although he still has not changed his strategic choice of a political process. The two estimated that the conflict will last for several more months, said the report.
