Israel has dropped its final objections to the building of a seaport for the Palestinian territory of Gaza, Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak's office said Thursday.

The Israelis gave the green light following a meeting Wednesday of their negotiator Oded Eran and his Palestinian counterpart Saeb Erekat, a statement said.

Differences over Israeli security control and environmental questions had been settled after several weeks of discussions, it added.

Erekat played down the significance of the deal, saying it covered only a few technical details.

The Palestinians had the right to begin work on the port from October under the Sharm el-Shekh agreement of September last year, he said - JERUSALEM (AFP)
