Israel attacks in Gaza, prevents Palestinian worshippers from entering Jerusalem

An Israeli jet targeted a car carrying Palestinian fighters from the Islamic Jihad in Gaza City on Friday afternoon, witnesses said. The plane fired a missile towards the vehicle but it missed the target, the sources said, according to AFP.

 

On Thursday, two Islamic Jihad fighters were lightly injured in an Israeli air attack on their car in the northern Gaza Strip.

 

Elsewhere, two Israelis traveling in a car were injured in a drive-by shooting in the occupied West Bank, the Israeli army and emergency services said on Friday, according to Reuters. An emergency service statement said the two settlers were hurt by bullet fragments in the central West Bank and were taken to hospital for treatment.

 

Meanwhile, the Israeli army stopped hundreds of Palestinian worshippers who were trying to enter the holy city of Jerusalem on the first Friday of Ramadan. Thursday marked the start of this year's Ramadan which coincides with the beginning of the Jewish New Year celebrations. On Wednesday, the Israeli army ordered the complete closure of the West Bank and the Gaza Strip.

 

Palestinian sources in Jerusalem reported that a huge number of Israeli soldiers and police were deployed in the Old City. Troops also set up checkpoints around the Al Aqsa mosque. Only those over the age of 45 holding army permits were being allowed into the city.
