ALBAWABA- Israel’s Knesset has passed two laws that effectively ban the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) from operating within Israel and in areas under its control.
This legislation, passed by a significant majority, has raised concerns globally, with the United States, United Kingdom, and Germany voicing apprehension.
The U.S. State Department emphasized its "deep concern" over the decision, noting UNRWA’s crucial role in delivering humanitarian aid in Gaza.
The governments of Ireland, Norway, Slovenia, and Spain jointly condemned Israel's recent legislation banning UNRWA operations in occupied Palestinian territories.
The statement criticized the Knesset's decision, emphasizing that it obstructs the agency’s vital humanitarian role and limits Palestinian refugees’ access to essential services and aid.
Palestinian officials condemned the move, with Presidential Spokesman Nabil Abu Rudeineh stating that Israel’s decision is an attempt to "liquidate" the refugee issue, a stance the Palestinian Authority will resist.
In response, the UNRWA Commissioner highlighted that ending the agency’s operations will not strip Palestinians of their refugee status, which remains protected by the UN General Assembly until a just resolution is achieved.
UNRWA labeled the ban as part of an ongoing campaign to undermine its role in supporting Palestinian refugees.
