ALBAWABA - Syria and Israel are close to concluding a security agreement, with the mediation from the United States, a Hebrew media report revealed.
The agreement could include "leasing the Golan Heights for 25 years" and "opening an Israeli embassy in Damascus," the report by i24NEWS mentioned.
The report quoted a Syrian source as saying that upcoming talks mediated by Washington could open the door to a security agreement and broader cooperation between Damascus and Tel Aviv.
It also mentioned that Syrian and Israeli officials are expected to meet soon, possibly in Paris, to finalize a security agreement between the two countries, according to a source close to Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa.
The source added, "There is considerable optimism regarding the possibility of opening an Israeli embassy in Damascus before the end of this year, given the significant progress in Syria's accession to the Abraham Accords."
The source explained that the original Syrian plan was limited to a security agreement and the opening of an Israeli liaison office in Damascus without diplomatic status. "But developments are accelerating considerably under pressure from the United States, specifically from President Trump, and in light of increasing Syrian openness."
