ALBAWABA - According to Channel 12, Israel is studying handing over Hezbollah tunnels over to the Lebanese Army as a test of its capabilities to operate effectively against Hezbollah.
The tunnel complex resides underneath the southern Lebanese village of Tebnit, the idea was raised by Israeli security officials to see whether the Lebanese had what it takes to secure its southern border. The idea is set to be discussed further in upcoming talks on Tuesday.
“This could be a test for the ability and motivation of the Lebanese army to deal publicly and in an unprecedented way with Hezbollah,” said an Israeli source.
The village of Tebnit has been an active warzone in the war - Israel controls the top side of the village with estimates ranging somewhere between 30 to 40 Hezbollah fighters still in the tunnels beneath the village, setting up ambushes and using slits to fire at Israeli troops.
Israel claims that the ceasefire agreement brokered by the U.S. has forbidden them from entering the tunnels and engaging Hezbollah, deciding instead to hand the entire area over to the Lebanese Army.
An additional tunnel village was revealed on Sunday under the village of Majdal Zoun, though handing this one over to the Lebanese seems contingent on their ability to secure the earlier one.
