Israel: Fact-Funding Panel on Violence Must Continue its Mission

The international fact-finding commission into the causes of the violence in the Palestinian territories must continue its work during the resumption of negotiations between the two parties, Israeli commission representative Moshe Koshanovsky said Tuesday.

"This commission can contribute to the peace process, therefore we will continue our mission," Koshanovsky said at a news conference in Tel Aviv.

The panel was agreed upon by Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak and Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat at the Sharm el-Sheik summit in Egypt on October 17.

Israelis and Palestinians are due to hand in a report to the commission by December 30, and the fact-finding body, led by former US senator George Mitchell, will make its recommendations public on March 30, Koshanovsky said.

He insisted that the Israeli report would "not be a propaganda document" and added that the commission "was not a tribunal", but was expected to issue "pragmatic proposals" -- TEL AVIV (AFP)
