ALBAWABA - A statement released by the United Nations confirmed that over 1,200 Palestinians are currently held by Israel in administrative detention.
U.N. special coordinator for the Middle East, Tor Wennesland, said on Wednesday that a total of 1,264 Palestinians are held in administrative detention in Israel.
Anadolu Agency reported citing the U.N. coordinator, that this number is considered the highest in over a decade.
Wennesland told the UN Security Council: "Israeli security forces carried out 1,042 search-and-arrest operations in the West Bank, resulting in 1,504 Palestinians arrested, including 88 children."
The U.N. special coordinator for the Middle East posted on X, formerly known as Twitter, worrying about the rising tension in the Gaza Strip.
Wennesland said: "Deeply concerned by the escalating tensions in and around #Gaza. The situation inside the Strip is dire and we must avoid another conflict that will have grave consequences for all. The people of Gaza have suffered enough and deserve more than a return to calm…"
He maintained: "The United Nations is talking to and working with all concerned to improve the lives of people in #Gaza, particularly the most vulnerable."
According to the U.N. envoy citing the period between July 15 and Sept. 19, 68 Palestinians, including 18 children, were dead by Israeli security forces during demonstrations, clashes, security operations, attacks or alleged attacks against Israelis, and other incidents, the Anadolu Agency reported.
