ALBAWABA- Israeli warplanes carried out extensive airstrikes across Lebanon on Wednesday, just hours after a US-Iran ceasefire took effect, hitting Beirut, Sidon, and southern border areas and leaving dozens of civilians dead or wounded.

Among the strikes was an attack on the coastal Farm Road, a key civilian route, where multiple casualties were reported. Lebanese officials described the incident as an indiscriminate strike on civilian infrastructure.

Israeli media, including Channel 12, reported that the operation was intended to assassinate Hezbollah Secretary-General Naim Qassem. The strike reportedly targeted a location where Qassem was believed to be present, though Israeli sources later indicated he was not at the site. Hezbollah has yet to issue an official response.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu defended the operation in a post on X, stating that the US-Iran ceasefire “does not include Lebanon,” signaling Israel’s intention to continue its campaign against Hezbollah despite the broader truce between Washington and Tehran.

Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif rejected that interpretation, asserting that the ceasefire “includes all fronts” and warning that partial adherence could destabilize the region. His remarks reflect mounting international concern over the durability of the agreement.

The latest strikes come amid Israel’s ongoing 39-day military campaign in Lebanon, which has killed more than 1,600 people, displaced over one million, and devastated large parts of the south, particularly areas believed to be under Hezbollah control. Israeli ground operations earlier in the conflict had already caused widespread destruction to villages and infrastructure.

Lebanese authorities condemned the strikes as a “blatant violation” of the ceasefire and called for urgent international action. The United States has not yet commented on Netanyahu’s claim that Lebanon falls outside the scope of the agreement, raising concerns that the fragile truce could unravel and reignite broader regional escalation.
