The Israeli occupation authorities Monday greenlighted a mega project in the Arab neighbourhood of wadi al-Joz in East Jerusalem, part of an ongoing scheme to Judaize the city, under which an entire Palestinian industrial area will be razed.
According to Israeli media, the plan will allocate more than 2,000 dunums of Palestinian-owned land and demolish more than 200 shops in the Arab Industrial Estate for the project, which they dubbed Silicon Wadi (Arabic for Silicon Valley), a reference to the US hub where thousands of tech giants are based.
New roads, a light rail, a park, commercial and shopping centres and hospitality facilities will be constructed under the project, which was announced two weeks ago by the Israeli municipality of Jerusalem to expand the finance and business sectors.
The mega venture, which will take until 2023 and cost an estimated $700 million, is another move to alter Jerusalem's identity, demography and infrastructure, encircle the Old City of Jerusalem and isolate entire Palestinian neighbourhoods.
Some of the store, repair shop and restaurant owners in the industrial area have already received demolition orders.
