The Israeli army on Monday took full control of the Rafah terminal between the self-ruled Gaza Strip and Egypt, closing the crossing, Palestinian security services said.

"The Israeli army on Monday night totally occupied the Rafah international terminal, which it has transformed into a closed military zone," the security services said in a statement.

It said all the Palestinian employees of the Rafah terminal were expelled.

The terminal is manned by Palestinians with the Israeli army in charge of security, under the self-rule accords which has left the Jewish state in control of Palestinian borders.

The closure came a few hours after a policeman was killed and six other Palestinians, including two other policemen, were wounded as Israeli troops opened fire near the Gaza checkpoint.

Palestinians earlier fired at a group of Israeli soldiers who were repairing a hole in a border fence at Rafah near the crossing-point, and Israeli reinforcements were sent to the area.

Israeli military sources said two soldiers were slightly wounded -- GAZA CITY, Gaza Strip (AFP)
