A high-ranking Israeli military official threatened Wednesday that Israel would reoccupy Lebanon if hostilities erupt on the two countries' border.

"If there are fights at the Israeli-Lebanese border, the Israeli army will be forced to re-conquer territory in south Lebanon," said General Moshe Ivri-Sukenik, the commander in chief of Israel's ground forces at the army's joint chiefs.

Israel occupied a thousand square-kilometer (400 square-mile) strip of south Lebanon from 1978 until May 24th.

Ivri-Sukenik spoke in the north of Israel at a press conference that was partially covered by public television - OCCUPIED JERUSALEM (AFP)
