An Israeli army officer has filed a complaint with the Hebron police department Sunday morning claiming that he had been assaulted by Jewish settlers in the West Bank.

The officer, who serves in the Civil Administration, said that he had been inspecting building irregularities in the Tel Rumaida neighborhood when the settlers assaulted him, taunting him and throwing eggs.

The officer sustained injuries to his hand as a result of the attack and a soldier accompanying him had threats made on his life, according to the Tel Aviv-based newspaper, Haaretz.

Police officers who were called to the scene were also on the receiving end of a barrage of eggs. A preliminary police investigation is focusing on a number of settlers, some of them youths, who took part in the assault. The police said that additional suspects would be detained, said the report.

There are 400 extremist Jewish settlers living in an enclave in the flashpoint city of Hebron, among 120,000 Palestinians.

According to the UK-based magazine The Economist, Israel has "flouted" the 1993 Oslo peace accords by settling thousands of its citizens on land seized from Palestinian owners in 1967 – Albawaba.com
