The head of Israel’s police investigations branch, Moshe Mizrahi, said Saturday that Arab-Israeli MK Azmi Bishara would be questioned at the first available opportunity on possible offenses arising from his current trip to Syria, reported the Jerusalem Post newspaper.
Bishara, who met Saturday with Syrian President Bashar Assad in Damascus, “faces possible charges under anti-terror laws for remarks he made during his trip and for meeting there with Hizbollah leaders and other known terrorists,” Mizrahi said.
Bishara, who went to Damascus to participate in memorial ceremonies marking the first anniversary of the death of president Hafez Assad, called upon the Arab world to "unite against the warmongering Sharon government," and voiced support for the Palestinian uprising.
Attorney General Elyakim Rubinstein has ordered a criminal investigation into Bishara's statements and has advised Prime Minister Ariel Sharon and Justice Minister Meir Sheetrit of his decision, said the paper.
"The attorney general has had his say and we will, of course, do what has to be done, and there is apparently a legal basis for dealing with the matter, which appears grave," Mizrahi told Channel 2 – Albawaba.com
