Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak's 'peace cabinet' met late Sunday and stressed that a drop in violence was a precondition for relaunching peace talks with the Palestinians.

A statement said the 'peace cabinet' said "the Palestinian Authority's respect for its commitments on security is key to the renewing of negotiations."

The 'peace cabinet' is due to meet again Monday to "receive a detailed report on the results of the Cairo meeting on security issues and commitments by the Palestinians to reduce violence and fight terrorism," the statement said.

The Israeli-Palestinian meeting Sunday in Cairo, which lasted seven hours according to Israeli television, was held with the head of the US intelligence service, the CIA, George Tenet, and the head of the Egyptian intelligence service, Omar Solimane -- JERUSALEM (AFP)
