Israel's President, Ezer Weizman, is to submit his letter of resignation to Knesset Speaker Avraham Burg Monday.

It will take effect 48 hours later, ending his seven years in office and a long career of service, reported the Jerusalem Post newspaper.

"I am completing 58 years of service since I joined the British Royal Air Force," Weizman said Sunday.

"I have accomplished a lot, and I am leaving feeling good and satisfied."

Speaking shortly after Shas leader Eli Yishai announced his party's intention to leave the coalition, Weizman called upon Prime Minister Ehud Barak to form "as wide a government as possible with as few disagreements as possible," but stopped short of calling for a national unity government, said the paper.

"It's easy to call for a national unity government. I am always in favor of a national unity government, but what good would a national unity government do if there are constant disagreements," Weizman said.

Asked about Shas, Weizman said, "It's too bad they are leaving. It's not nice after all Barak has done to help them. They'll regret it later."

Burg will serve as interim president until a new president is elected on July 31st and sworn in on August 1st, said the paper - Albawaba.com
