Ivory Coast's new interior minister, Emile Boga Doudou, promised Saturday an unbiased investigation into a mass grave containing up to 50 bodies outside the commercial capital Abidjan.

During a visit to the grave site, Doudou said that the killers would not go unpunished.

"The government will ensure that those guilty will be punished in line with the law. There is no one who will benefit from impunity for any reason," Doudou said.

"Justice will do its work," he added.

"This is a sad day, I'm indignant and sad. I would never have thought that barbarism could reach this far," he said.

He also expressed his "indignation, in the name of the president of the republic" Laurent Gbagbo.

Asked about accusations by a man who survived the killings that police were responsible, Doudou said that "until the investigation is conducted, it's not possible to accuse anyone." – ABIDJAN (AFP)
